Top Do’s & Dont’s When Planning Your Wedding
We interviewed our founders Chris & Irene Davidson to find out what they learned from organising their own wedding. They said these do’s and don’ts are a must-know for all couples planning their wedding…
Do invest in professionals!
We had a lot of family and friends offer to do the photography, bake the cake and MC our wedding. It was lovely actually realising how much people cared and wanted to be part of our wedding. One thing we knew for sure was that we wanted all our family and friends to enjoy our wedding as our guests. We wanted them to create lifelong memories with us on our special day. Professionals know exactly what to do and how to manage unexpected issues. The last thing we wanted was to spend time-solving problems and helping our friends and family with issues that pop up on the day.
The result; every aspect of our wedding was done properly, on time and all issues were resolved while our guests and we enjoyed every single minute of the day.
Of course, if you have family and friends that are professionals then, by all means, get them on board! 😂 🤙
Do start your planning as early as possible…
The earlier you start the more time you have to find the right venue and the right vendors to help you bring your dream wedding to life. Starting the planning phase early meant we didn’t have to make rushed decisions and settle for less. We had the luxury of organising everything at a calm and steady pace which made the process so much more fun. Starting early also meant we could coordinate meetings with vendors and venues while staying on top of the workload at home and at work.
We realised the biggest advantage was that venues and vendors weren’t booked out for our wedding dates. This was a huge relief!
Do delegate the entire responsibility for your hens and bucks celebrations
There is no better feeling than remembering that all you have to do is show up for your hens or bucks celebrations while everything is taken care of. As time gets closer to your wedding, there are bound to be things that pop up last minute which requires your full attention. That’s when we were thankful that we didn’t have to worry about our hens and bucks celebrations.
Imagine having to get all the bridesmaids or groomsmen coordinated and agreeing to all aspects of the celebrations including the costs. All while trying to sort out last minute issues with your actual wedding day. No thanks! We had enough going on as a lot of our family had flown over and were staying at our place.
Thankfully, our maid of honour and best manhandled the celebrations and coordinated everyone involved amazingly. When we showed up to the separate celebrations we definitely felt the love. Not having to worry about this got us a very great mood for our wedding day.
Do find one company that can organise everything!
Thankfully in our case, Chris already knew a lot of the vendors in the wedding industry that could help us put our wedding together. This was actually one of the main reasons why we decided to start SAVVy Entertainment, a one-stop-wedding-shop. Now we have a large team of professionals that we trust and are amazing at what they do. Everything you need for your wedding you can find here.
This means you let us bring you the options that best suit your style and vision for your wedding. And the cherry on top is that you only deal with one invoice for the lot!
Don’t underestimate the importance of pampering yourself before the wedding
Organising the wedding and coordinating with the vendors, bridesmaids, groomsmen and family can get very hectic. Treat yourself and your closest to a day at the spa for the girls and a day golfing or fishing for the boys. You will have the time of your life enjoying a much needed relaxing break from everything. This will put you and everyone involved in the best of spirits, ready for the big day with smiles and laughter all around.
Feeling relaxed before your wedding day will slow things down and allow you to enjoy each and every moment. We were so relaxed on our wedding day! We remember every minute like it was yesterday. We could really soak it all in and cherish moments through the day which we would’ve otherwise missed being stressed and occupied by the logistics of the day.
Don’t forget to include all vendors on the runsheet
There’s nothing worse than having some vendors know and some not know about what is going to happen when on your big day. You definitely want your wedding DJ and MC to collaborate and make sure your wedding program runs smoothly. Prepare a run sheet with all vendors involved with a time schedule and contact details. This ensures everyone knows where and when they need to be in order for a seamless wedding day program.
On our wedding day, our MC and DJ managed to work together to coordinate the whole day regardless of unexpected time delays or technical difficulties. This was a delightful surprise for us as we didn’t know that a few things went wrong till weeks after the wedding when they told haha incredible right?!
Don’t leave it to their imagination.
If you have a very particular vision for your wedding when it comes to the styling, flowers, lighting and anything else that makes your wedding everything you have ever wanted don’t leave it to peoples imagination. Get an inspiration/style board happening. There are many simple ways to do this. You can take it old school and rip out photos from magazines or go digital and create a wedding board on Pinterest. It’s a collection of visuals that you can share with everyone involved in the organisation of your wedding day. This will help people physically see and understand what you really want.
What’s even better is that thousands of grooms and brides before you have left their wedding inspiration boards still active. Plenty of ideas and inspiration for you to choose from.
Lastly, the most important advice we can give you for your upcoming wedding is to stop what you’re doing a few times through your wedding and reception just to soak it all in. The smiles, the love and the sheer joy shared by all your loved ones. You will have worked so hard to make your wedding day absolutely perfect so enjoy it yourself. Yeeeew! 💖
